58.4% of Students Said They Were Frustrated with Academic Pressure : mPOWER Survey

News Desk, News Nation 360 : The Aditya Birla Education Trust's mPOWER mental health project has disclosed the shocking findings of a poll that was done across 30 Indian colleges, including Hastings B.Ed College in Kolkata, in honour of World Suicide Prevention Day. The survey's results show a frightening reality: only 2.9% of students identify parental pressure as the primary cause of depression, compared to 58.4% of students who attribute melancholy to academic pressure or exams. Furthermore, 10.4% of respondents felt melancholy about marital issues, 5.0% about work and competitive demands, and 14.3% about future uncertainties. A national survey in India revealed alarming rates of mental health issues among students, with hopelessness and academic stress being major concerns. Despite high psychological distress, many students were reluctant to seek professional help, often turning to friends for support. The survey also highlighted significant gaps in suicide prevention knowledge and awareness, with most students unaware of warning signs and resources. To address these issues, mPOWER organized a canvas painting program and plans to launch 'Open Mic' activities and street plays in various colleges, aiming to reach over 1 lakh students and promote mental health awareness and support through the helpline 1800-120-8200-50. mPOWER's Vice President-Operations, Parveen Shaikh stated that it is concerning that such a high proportion of young people are depressed as a result of strain from their studies. They, at mPOWER think that hope and resiliency can overcome any obstacle, which is why they started the "Hope" campaign on World Suicide Prevention Day to encourage and uplift youth. They are actively trying to ensure that children may flourish in a loving academic and emotional environment. The power is entirely in their hands.
