British Council & BFI Flare to Host Special Screenings of Five Films For Freedom in Kolkata

News Desk, News Nation 360 : The British Film Institute Flare: London LGBTQIA+ Film Festival and the British Council, the UK's international organisation for cultural relations and educational opportunities, are celebrating a long-standing partnership by hosting special screenings of "Five Films For Freedom" at British Council, Kolkata, on March 28. With a focus on five strong LGBTQIA+ short films from Indonesia, New Zealand, China, Switzerland, and the UK, this year's program offers a daring assortment of international tales that honour fortitude, individuality, and the strength of community. The 'Five Films For Freedom' 2025 has five short films on identity and freedom: Lisa Ott's DragFox (UK, 8 min) is about young Sam's musical journey towards accepting gender identity with Ian McKellen's voiceover as a fox; Andre Shen's If I Make it to the Morning (USA/China, 9 min) is about a Chinese teenager in New York who experiences unexpected tension while on her college tour; Oktania Hamdani and Winner Wijaya's NGGAK!!! (Indonesia, 8 min) portrays online gaming girlfriends challenged by a mother's arranged marriage plan; Cameron Richards and Charlie Tidmas's documentary We’ll Go Down in History (UK, 25 min) chronicles the journey of the trans football club TRUK United. Ramon Te Wake's Wait, Wait, Now! (New Zealand, 12 min) shows best friends Alex and Sam's fantasy world in their mother's wardrobe, threatened by discovery. Such influential movies are playing in Mumbai, Kolkata, Delhi, Chennai, and Bengaluru. These powerful films are being shown offline in Mumbai, Kolkata, Delhi, Chennai, and Bengaluru, providing a shared viewing experience. The 'Five Films For Freedom' 2025, a global short film program celebrating LGBTQIA+ stories produced by the British Council in partnership with BFI Flare: London LGBTQIA+ Film Festival, will be screened in Kolkata on Friday, 28 March 2025, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the British Council, L&T Chambers, 16, Camac St, Kolkata, West Bengal 700017. Entry to the event is free, seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis, and it is exclusively open to individuals aged 18 years and above.
