News Desk, News Nation 360 : An internal medicine specialist, professional dietitian, and fitness specialist affiliated with the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), Dr. Vanita Rahman, gave a talk at Kolkata's Loreto College. In her talk, she discussed how plant-based diet and lifestyle changes might help prevent and treat three common health issues among Indian women: thyroid illness, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and breast cancer. Kolkata is facing a significant increase in breast cancer, which, along with cervical cancer, accounts for nearly 60% of female cancer cases, while a substantial number of Indian women are affected by PCOS (2-35%) and thyroid disorders (estimated 42 million, disproportionately women due to hormonal shifts); Dr. Rahman has stressed the vital role of plant-based nutrition in preventing and aiding recovery from these conditions, noting its potential to lower cancer risk, improve insulin sensitivity in PCOS, and support thyroid function, alongside the importance of regular physical activity and maintaining a healthy weight; a well-received session at Loreto College fostered discussion on plant-based nutrition, leading to a call for prioritizing preventative healthcare and integrating nutrition into medical education and public health efforts. Dr Rahman stated that the lifestyle decisions and the meals everyone consumes have a significant impact on health. Numerous studies have demonstrated that a plant-based diet high in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains actively lowers the risk of breast cancer, enhances insulin sensitivity in PCOS, and supports thyroid function. Fighting these health issues requires empowering women with the information they need to make wise food and lifestyle decisions.
