Health Experts Demand Immediate Action Against Plastic Waste and Microplastics Affecting Public Health

News Desk, News Nation 360 : The India Clean Air Network (ICAN) held a news conference on National Pollution Prevention Day to draw attention to the serious health risks that plastic pollution and microplastics pose. The event, which featured a panel of distinguished medical professionals from a range of specialities, highlighted the urgent need for action while shedding light on the relationship between environmental sustainability and public health. Additionally, the medical panel issued urgent health advice. In addition to preventive measures and practices that should be incorporated into daily life to better prepare for the onslaught of polluted winter days, the health advisory offers a variety of strategies for residents, schools, colleges, the government, and vulnerable communities to mitigate the effects of air pollution. Based on a primary survey of suppliers and customers, India Clean Air Network also published a report on the sustainability assessment of Kolkata's ban on single-use plastic. The alarming rise in plastic pollution, especially in single-use plastics, threatens the environment and health. The long-lasting nature of plastics, their contribution to greenhouse gas emissions, and the release of harmful chemicals during incineration exacerbate climate change and pose severe health risks. Microplastics, resulting from the degradation of larger plastic items, have infiltrated various environmental components, including seafood, water, and air. Exposure to microplastics over a long time is related to several health issues, such as respiratory diseases, gastrointestinal problems, hormonal imbalances, and potential chronic diseases. According to the opinions of experts who are leading doctors and environmental scientists, urgent measures must be taken to address plastic pollution and its effect on human health and the environment. Ajay Mittal, Co-Chairperson, of Programs IndiaCAN, stated that Microplastics and plastic pollution are unseen invaders of everyday lives that have a significant negative influence on both the environment and health. At India Clean Air Network, they think that stricter laws, teamwork, and a steadfast dedication to sustainable living are all necessary to confront this challenge. According to the poll, the word "single-use plastic," both in English and local languages, was unknown to 24% of customers and 30% of sellers. One of the biggest obstacles to putting policies and procedures meant to reduce plastic waste into action is the lack of knowledge among important stakeholders.
