News Desk, News Nation 360 : Fatty Liver Disease, or Hepatic Steatosis, is a very widespread liver condition involving millions of people worldwide annually. It is an accumulation of fat in liver cells, impairing liver function. Excess fat in the liver is undesirable; more than that, it results in serious trouble. Dr. Srikant Mohanta, Consultant Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Narayana Hospitals, Howrah, has elaborated on this issue. According to him, when the liver's weight is more than 5% fat, it is termed Fatty Liver. There are primarily two kinds. Metabolic Associated Steatosis Liver Disease (MASLD) is associated with obesity, diabetes, and high cholesterol. Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (AFLD) results from excessive alcohol consumption. In the initial phase, Fatty Liver has no symptoms. This makes it hard to diagnose without a medical test. However, in case the issue worsens, some symptoms may appear. These include peculiar tiredness or weakness. Abdominal pain may occur as well. Weight loss may result. The liver might swell up. Jaundice, or a yellowish colour of eyes and skin, may seldom occur. If one is persistently tired or weak, one must visit a physician. Unexplained loss of weight or persistent pain in the abdomen are also indications to visit a physician immediately. Individuals who are obese, have diabetes, high cholesterol, or consume excess alcohol are at higher risk of developing fatty liver. Routine liver testing is necessary for such individuals. Discovering it early makes the disease simpler. It is also an important component in making the patient recover. Fatty liver can be associated with genetics. It can be inherited. Some genetic alterations may result in MASLD. MASLD is also related to how individuals live. Not consuming healthy food and a lack of physical activity are causes of fatty liver. The environment and the type of life one leads also contribute. Various tests can detect Fatty Liver. Blood tests, such as liver enzyme tests (ALT and AST), look for inflammation or damage. Imaging tests like Ultrasound, CT scans, or MRI reveal the amount of fat in the liver. In some cases, a liver biopsy must be done to determine the severity of the liver damage or look for other illnesses. Healthy eating is crucial in avoiding Fatty Liver and maintaining a healthy liver. A diet that is balanced diet should have fruits and vegetables consumed in moderation. Whole grains should be part of it. Lean protein is okay, too. Healthy fats such as olive oil, nuts, and avocado should be chosen. One must not take sweetened drinks, candies, and white flour. Avoid alcohol as much as possible. Take plenty of water so that the liver functions properly. Do not forget that it is possible to recover from Fatty Liver. One can get back to a healthy lifestyle if one modifies their lifestyle. Adhering to the physician's instructions is also necessary. One should be attentive to the signs and risk of increasing symptoms. Taking medical advice in time and following a healthy diet promotes overall well-being.
