Medica Honours Patients' Experiences with Transformative TAVR Procedures

News Desk, News Nation 360 : To recognise and celebrate the patients who had Transcatheter Valve Replacement (TAVR) at Medica Superspecialty Hospital in recent years, the Manipal Hospitals group hosted an event. Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) is a minimally invasive treatment that uses a cardiac catheter to replace the aortic valve. It is becoming more and more popular because, in contrast to traditional valve replacement surgery, which is carried out by cardiac surgeons under general anaesthesia in an operating room, TAVR is carried out by interventional cardiologists in a cath lab using basic heart catheters, negating the need for prolonged ventilation and anaesthesia. During the past four and a half years, Medica has seen a rise in the number of TAVRs. Medica Superspecialty Hospital has emerged as a leading centre for TAVR procedures in Eastern India, with a significant milestone of performing over 5000 TAVR procedures in the past decade. This achievement aligns with the global trend of increasing TAVR procedures, with over 120,000 patients undergoing the procedure worldwide in 50 countries. It was graced by renowned cardiologists from Medica Superspecialty Hospital and other units of Manipal Hospitals, namely, (Prof.) Dr Rabin Chakraborty, Dr Dilip Kumar, Dr Arindam Pande, Dr Anup Banerjee, Dr Rana Rathor Roy, Dr Debopriyo Mondal, Dr P.K. Hazra, and Dr Soumya Patra. This achievement has underscored the commitment of Medica Superspecialty Hospital towards advanced cardiac care and patient outcomes in the region. During the event, (Prof.) Dr. Rabin Chakraborty expressed that TAVR is a unique and intricate process. Nonetheless, such complicated cases can be handled without any issues if the hospital has a skilled cardiac staff. The preferred treatment for heart valve dysfunction will soon be catheter-based valve replacement. Since open cardiac surgery under prolonged general anaesthesia and ventilator is not medically appropriate for those over 65 and those with numerous comorbid disorders, transcatheter valve replacement is today a viable option for these patients.
